Breaking: ASUU extends its strike once more

The continuing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once more been extended. The choice was made following the National Executive Council meeting on Monday, August 29, at the union's headquarters at the University of Abuja.

ASUU extended its continuing strike for a further two months, beginning exactly one month later, to give the government more time to respond to all of its demands.

Today marks day 196 of the strike.

The Federal Government's unwillingness to carry through earlier agreements both parties signed has led to the union going on strike.

University Transparency Accountability Solution, earned academic allowances, promotion backlogs, and other issues are among the grievances raised by the lecturers.

In Nigeria, academic employees at universities are represented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was established in 1978. ASUU is a branch of the 1965-founded Nigerian Association of University Teachers (NAUT). The University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Ife, and University of Lagos were the only five universities that made up NAUT at the time. On May 30, 2021, Professor Victor Emmanuel Osodeke became the organization's president.

ASUU was established in 1978 to represent the interests of all academic staff in Federal and State universities in Nigeria. It is the successor organization to the Nigerian Association of University Teachers, which was established in 1965. Even if ASUU is made up of numerous universities, there are still many other universities that are not part of the organization. The following institutions are among them, along with every private university in Nigeria.

1. Nigeria's Enugu State is home to the Federal University.

2. Unilorin, also referred to as the Federal University of Ilorin.

3. DELSU, or Delta State University, is located in Abraka.

In the 1980s, the Union actively participated in movements against the military government. The union orchestrated a national strike in 1988 in an effort to win fair pay and autonomy for universities. As a result, the ASUU was declared prohibited on August 7, 1988, and all of its assets were taken. After another strike, it was permitted to continue in 1990, but on August 23, 1992, it was once more outlawed. On September 3, 1992, a deal was finally negotiated that addressed several of the union's objectives, including the right of employees to engage in collective bargaining. In 1994 and 1996, the ASUU conducted additional strikes to protest the military government of Sani Abacha's firing of employees.

ASUU announced a one-month strike in 2022 that would start on February 14th. The revitalization of public institutions, earned allowances, better funding for state universities, and unpaid promotion arrears are just a few of the requests made by the lecturers. Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, established a commission to revise the 2009 agreement with ASUU on March 7th, 2022. Professor Emeritus Nimi Briggs, Pro-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University (AEFU), Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, is the chairman of the seven-person panel. ASUU extended the strike by an additional 8 weeks on March 14. After exactly 56 days of the strike, on April 11, 2022, the Federal Government finally met with ASUU. One of the longest ASUU strikes in history, it was prolonged by a further 12 weeks on May 9th, bringing the total length of the strike to six months without a settlement. ASUU extended the strike by a further 4 weeks on August 1st, 2022. ASUU promised to call off the strike if their demands were granted when the FG met with them on August 16, 2022, but the meeting ended in an impasse. ASUU later announced that it would start consulting on the best course of action. In response to the government's offer, the local ASUU chapters at ABU, BUK, UDUS, and OAU opted to continue and declare an indefinite strike. State universities including Adekunle Ajasin University, TASUED, Kano State University of Technology, and Benue State University have likewise insisted on carrying the strike out to its natural conclusion.
