On Friday, British police said that they had detained a 36-year-old man for fatally shooting a nine-year-old girl who was caught in the middle of a gang fight. The murder of the young girl, the third deadly shooting in the city in a week, has prompted calls for tougher gun control measures. On Monday night, Olivia Pratt-Korbel was shot and killed when the shooter's intended victim tried to flee by breaking into her Liverpool home. The captured individual was being held on suspicion of murder, according to Merseyside Police, who made an appeal to the criminal underworld to turn up the shooter. Additionally, he was detained for two attempted murder counts. Cheryl, Olivia's mother, was shot in the wrist while attempting to block the intended target from breaking through the door. The force released a statement saying, "The arrest happened during an operation involving armed officers in the Merseyside area last night." Olivia was injured in the chest while standing behind her mother and trying in vain to shut the front door after hearing gunfire outside. As the young girl lay dying, friends took the intended target, a local convicted burglar, to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. He was taken into custody on Tuesday for violating the conditions of his early release from prison. Locals in Liverpool's Dovecot neighborhood have accused rival gangs of carrying out the killing.
