Media organization calls on FG and ASUU to change their positions

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been advised by the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria to change the subject in order to open the door for a peaceful end to the protracted strike. In a statement released on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State, the Executive Director of MMWG, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasized the necessity for the parties involved in the issue to change the subject due to the irreparable harm the protracted ASUU strike has caused to the system of higher education. He claimed that several Nigerians' businesses had also suffered as a result of the strike. According to Abdullahi, the federal government's and ASUU's harsh stance could not make things better.

He urged the ASUU leadership to exercise greater patriotism by ending the strike now that the government has approved the new payment system. He stated that after the ASUU might have called off the strike, further negotiations for greater pay and the fulfillment of other provisions of the 2009 accord could take place. In addition, Abdullahi requested that the federal government waive the "no work, no pay" rule for this specific ASUU strike, citing the current delicate nature of the situation and the impossibility of finding a solution through any rigid attitude. He pointed out that the ASUU strike is hurting some Nigerians financially and undoing the educational progress previously made.
