Osun forbids roadside selling and will penalize negligent vendors

The Osun State Government has announced a ban on merchandise displays on public roadways throughout the state and issued a warning that violators will face legal action. Funke Egbemode, the state's commissioner for civic education and information, announced this in a statement on Wednesday in Osogbo. Egbemode, who claimed that the State Executive Council meeting decided to outlaw street trade, stated that the restriction was essential due to the increased traffic congestion and risk to market patrons.

In part, the statement said, "The Osun state government is concerned about the growing threat that roadside goods displays are posing to its inhabitants and communities. A Special Task Force has been established by the State Executive Council to halt the trend. This crew will make unannounced visits to the marketplaces and detain anyone selling goods that are blocking traffic. To ensure safety in our marketplaces, the team will collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Corps and other law enforcement organizations. The state cannot stand by while some market vendors, particularly those who participate in weekly markets, obstruct traffic lanes and block pedestrian pathways with their merchandise. The repulsive and dangerous trend must halt.

"The government promptly established a Special Task Force to monitor market compliance with safe conduct and to protect drivers. As a result, it is urging all merchants and the customers who support them to abide by this order since the Task Force team will operate without warning and those who are caught will face fast legal action.
