Parents Willing To Pay Universities N10,000 Each To End ASUU Strike

The association is also advocating for parents to pay N10,000 every session in order to help the government provide additional funding for institutions. A proposal to end the Academic Staff Union of Universities' protracted strike has been made by the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria.

For each parent, the group has proposed a contribution of N10,000 every session, in an effort to get the government to increase the amount of money available for colleges.

Dr. Ademola Ekundayo, the NAPTAN public relations officer, revealed this in a Tuesday interview with The PUNCH. Ekundayo, who bemoaned the country's ongoing university closures, claimed that parents were the ones who were most affected by the conflict between the Federal Government and ASUU.

He stated, "We have written the Office of the Education Minister requesting an audience so that we may consider a plan.

"We are suggesting a monthly payment to the universities of N10,000 per parent, paid directly. In addition to other statutory payments, that will be our own contribution to increasing the amount of money available to the universities.

"You could refer to it as a parent support levy for universities. The result of the strike is that we are affected. We implore the ASUU and the Federal Government to settle their issues as soon as possible.''

Opeyemi Falegan, a philanthropist and the head of the Opeyemi David Falegan Foundation, has urged previous presidents and military leaders to become involved in the ongoing ASUU strike. He also urged the Federal Government and the lecturers on strike to think about making the necessary compromises to put an end to the walkout.

Social Democratic Party leader from the United Kingdom made the plea in a statement headed, "Strike: Nigerian tertiary education system on the verge of catastrophic collapse if ASUU strike continues, Falegan warns," which was made accessible to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.

The Federal Government and ASUU may completely collapse Nigeria's tertiary education system as a result of the union's ongoing industrial action. In the benefit of the poor Nigerian kids and their parents, they had to put their weapon down, Falegan stated.

He asked prior military commanders, including Yakubu Gowon and Abdusalam Abubakar, as well as former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan to become involved in order to persuade President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to assure the reopening of the universities.

"We urge well-meaning Nigerians, especially previous Heads of State and Presidents, to persuade the country's current leaders to give in to ASUU's demands and enable the teachers and students to return to the classrooms," he stated.

If the Federal Government continues to defy its national headquarters' requests, the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma branch of ASUU has called for a complete and indefinite nationwide strike by union members.

The union made the choice during its congress, which was held on Monday at the institution's launch campus in Dutsin-ma.

The PUNCH on Tuesday received a copy of the resolutions adopted during the congress that were signed by Jibrin Shagari, the branch's chairperson, and Mzungu Ignatius, the branch secretary. See more: https://youtu.be/cosWq8_rfW0
