Pro-chancellors: State universities' ASUU membership is voluntary.

The agreement agreed between the Federal Government and lecturers in Federal Universities under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities could not be forced upon state universities, according to the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities on Monday. The provosts also noted that state universities' membership was voluntary and that there was a need to democratize union membership in universities. According to social media reports, certain state institutions have faced criticism for continuing the strike that was called by the national body of ASUU. The deal between the Federal Government and ASUU won't be binding on state universities, according to Ben Goong, a spokesman for the ministry of education. However, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of ASUU, and a few state university chairmen have reacted negatively, asserting that "ASUU is one." "The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-owned Universities read with alarm and disbelief a statement made by the President of the ASUU Prof. Emmanuel Osodike on a television program on Arise, where he said that State Universities are "irrelevant and quacks" on August 26, 2022,"

Our initial response was to disregard the President of ASUU's tendentious, poorly thought-out, and blatantly unconscionable statement, but after some thought, it was deemed necessary to respond to this rather unfortunate statement in light of the President of ASUU's position within the Nigerian university system. Although COPSUN does not desire to engage in a debate with the leader of ASUU, the Committee would like to clarify the following: "That the provosts of our state universities and, in fact, the council members are illustrious and talented people who have served and are now serving this country in a variety of roles. Former vice chancellors, retired generals in the armed forces, retired ambassadors, senior Nigerian attorneys, well-known politicians, and other eminent professionals are among the members. "COPSUN wants to remind the ASUU president that joining the union is entirely up to you. Therefore, his ignorant approach and disparagement of state institutions will not result in the creation of innovative solutions to prevent existential extinction, which will address the various issues the Nigerian university system is currently facing.

"The extremely sad ill-digested perspective of the President of ASUU had validated the position of this Committee on the following matters," the pro-chancellors continued. "The unfounded perception among many Union members that the Unions are superior to the Councils of the Universities, which serve as their employers, and the detrimental professionalization of Union offices that function in our Universities. "There is an urgent need to democratize union membership in colleges so that anyone can choose whether or not to join a union, giving them that freedom. "Devolution of authority on matters relating to labor, wages, and salaries with flexibility for employers to bargain with their staff, as done in other regions of the world from which we adopted the university system." Agreements struck between the Federal Government and its employees in the Universities, to which State Universities are not parties, may not be enforced or pressured to be followed. "It is time to accept the federal nature of our government in all things, rather than picking and choosing, particularly when it comes to pay and salary concerns."
