Senior cop is assaulted in Lagos by a corporal over traffic

A little incident occurred on Saturday at the Simbiat Abiola Way in Ikeja, Lagos State, when a police corporal punched his boss. Social media reported that the unnamed corporal had approached Supol Edgar, the commanding officer, for allegedly causing traffic at the intersection connecting the Awolowo Way. The corporal then assaulted Edgar after they got into a disagreement. According to information obtained by our correspondent, the policeman was unaware that Edgar was a police officer who lived at a nearby barracks. When Edgar apparently called out to his barracks mates during the altercation, they reportedly surged out and hauled the cop inside.

The corporal was taken into the police barracks with force by our correspondent, who was on the scene of the incident. For security considerations, an eyewitness who only gave his name as Stanley claimed that the issue was brought on by a trike rider who attempted to get past some cars at the intersection. "The Supol tried to warn a tricycle rider who tried to squeeze past some cars and that caused the traffic bottleneck," he claimed. But when the corporal saw what was going on, he hurriedly got out of his car to reprimand him for the delay. They got into an altercation over it, and even though the senior officer reminded him that he was also a police officer, he was not given a chance to respond as he continued to slap and beat him. When the Supol made the call, someone from the barracks arrived to carry him.

The cop did not divulge his identify in a timely manner, according to a traffic warden who was present but asked to remain anonymous since he was not authorized to comment on the situation. "I was directing traffic when I noticed a man quarrel with someone in the trike," he added. I went up to him to ask him what was going on, but he remained silent. He was gone while I continued my work. When I returned to see what was causing the increased traffic later, I saw that both of them were dragging each other.

Additionally, our correspondent saw that the corporal was asked to kneel while other senior officers gathered around him before being stripped of his uniform and brought into the barracks. He would be imprisoned at the Area F Police Command, according to Edgar. Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the Lagos State Police, claimed to be unaware of the occurrence. He said he'd check and get back to you. As at the time this report was submitted, he still hadn't done anything.
