Orukpe Monday, an inspector with the Lagos State Police Command, passed away as a result of the alleged torture he endured at the hands of soldiers who attacked him and his coworkers in the Trade Fair region of Lagos State. Igbafe Ojo, a different inspector who was allegedly tortured by the same soldiers, was being treated at the military hospital in the Ojo Military Cantonment, where medics were reportedly fighting to preserve his life. According to information obtained by reports, the troops were on their way to the Ojo Military Cantonment on Wednesday for a training session when the bus transporting them ran into some light traffic near the Trade Fair portion of the Lagos Badagry Expressway. According to a source who spoke with our correspondent, several of the troops descended from the car to confront the policeman after realizing that the delay was being created by them clearing the way for a truck driver to merge onto the road. The source added that the troops detained two officers. The source claimed that the scenario resulted in an argument that turned into a brawl when one of the soldiers allegedly smacked one of the policemen. The other three policeman, though, escaped to safety. According to the source, "About 30 soldiers were traveling to Ojo Military Cantonment for training. In a green army coaster bus, they were being transported, but as they got closer to the Trade Fair area, they ran into traffic.
"At the time one truck tried to access the Lagos Badagry Expressway, about five police officers were stationed at the intersection by the side of the road. In order for the truck to enter the freeway safely, the police officers had to stop traffic on the road. "During that time, automobile traffic slowed down; the first three vehicles were driven by civilians, while the bus carrying the 30 soldiers was the fourth. Some of the troops got out of their cars and began arguing with the policemen when they realized it was police officers who had stopped the vehicles in front of them. "One of the troops struck a police officer during the dispute, which caused a brawl to break out. As a result, the soldiers were able to overwhelm the police officers due to their size. When the troops tried to take the gun that one of the officers was holding, they were stopped and forced to remove the magazine. Two policemen were beaten and taken to the barracks by the military. The third cop fired into the air and bolted as they attempted to remove him. The senior police officer was severely assaulted and his gun was taken, but the other inspector managed to escape as well.
The source claimed that the troops had allegedly tortured the two policemen they had taken to their barracks, and that one of them had passed away as a result of the injuries he had received. "By the time the police arrived at the barracks to locate the two officers, they discovered one of them was unconscious and the other's body had been wrapped as a result of the troops' abuse. The troops refused to give the injured officers to the senior policemen who arrived to check on their colleagues after seeing them in the military hospital in the barracks. The soldiers refused to hand over the guns they had in their hands and said the officers were too weak to leave the hospital, the person said. When reached, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police's public relations officer, stated, "There was a dispute on Wednesday between troops and police, and the command is closely coordinating with the army high command to settle the concerns. But a police officer who was involved in the incident has passed away.
Major Olaniyi Osoba, the 81 Division Nigeria Army spokeswoman, said in a statement that the army was already in contact with the state police command to handle the situation.
In light of the Division's attitude and zero tolerance for any misbehavior, this situation is deeply regretful.
As a result, a Board of Inquiry has been established by the Division to investigate the circumstances leading up to the regrettable incident. Anyone found to be responsible will be subjected to the full force of the disciplinary measures at the conclusion of the investigation. As a result, he stated, "the Division wishes to express its sympathies to the Ojo Police Division and members of the victim's family."
