All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's campaign team members have responded to Prof. Wole Soyinka's response to a viral video of Pyrates Confraternity members making fun of Tinubu's illness. In the widely shared video on social media, some Confraternity group members can be seen voicing criticisms while gyrating to a song that mocks Tinubu for the speech he gave in Ogun State before the party presidential primary.
It may be recalled that the former governor of Lagos State said, "Emi lo kan," or "It's my turn to get power after President Muhammadu Buhari," together with Governor Abiodun and Ogun State delegates during a contentious address.
"Hand dey shake, leg dey shake, Baba wey no well, e de yell emi lo kan (Hands are trembling, legs are shaking)" was sung by Pyrates Confraternity members in the viral video. It's my turn, a sick old man is shouting.
A sick old man saying "it's my turn" is described as "Emi lo kan (2 times), Baba wey no well, him dey shout Emi Lokan" (It's my turn (2 times).
"Let me affirm this cultural statement. I carefully listened to the chant's lyrics, and I'll be honest: I'm horrified. It offends me, I think. I come from a society that does not make fun of physical ailments or impairments.
"Quite the opposite. No matter the type of sorrow, the Yoruba faith appoints a deity, Obatala, as the divine protector of the oppressed. We are born with this sensibility and carry it with us throughout our lives. It is based on the idea that everyone is still subject to mortal weakness.
"CLR James, author of The Black Jacobins, Beyond A Boundary, and other works, is one of my favorite authors and I recently got cause to write about him. He was my ideological uncle, I said. Although he had Parkinson's disease, he fought the condition for many years while still being aware, lucid, and assertive.
"We engaged in political dialogue at the Dakar Festival of Negro Arts, the Tanzanian Pan-African Congress, and other other cultural and political gatherings.
"Despite his difficulty, we went out to eat frequently during his lifespan. To take part in any action that made fun of his condition would be unimaginable and a violation of his memory, according to Soyinka.
However, in response to Soyinka's response, individuals in the Tinubu camp have allegedly claimed that the APC presidential candidate and his staff are displeased with the Nobel Prize winner's response. They said that Soyinka repeatedly exposed "that Tinubu has Parkinson's disease, so demonstrating that he is an ineligible candidate.
They are upset because Professor Soyinka said too much about Bola Tinubu's health, he continued.
