Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin (traditional ruler) of the Yoruba town of Oyo and legitimate heir to the throne of its ancient empire, lived from October 15, 1938, until April 22, 2022.

Alaafin Adeyemi III was born on October 15, 1938, as Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi into the Alowolodu Royal House and as a descendant of Raji Adeniran Adeyemi (born 1871–1960), who later assumed the title of Alaafin in 1945, and Ibironke of Epo-Gingin, who passed away when he was a small boy. According to reports, his father had more than 200 wives. Alaafin Adeyemi I Alowolodu, who ruled during the Kiriji War and was the final sovereign of the Oyo Empire before British colonisation, was his paternal grandpa. Oba Atiba Atobatele, who created New Oyo, was the great-grandfather of Alaafin Adeyemi I and Adeyemi III. Alaafin Abiodun, Atiba's father and his great-great-grandfather, is a direct ancestor of Oranmiyan, the creator of the Oyo Empire.

Due to his sympathies with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens, Lamidi's father, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi II Adeniran, was removed from power and exiled in 1954. (NCNC). He had a disagreement with Bode Thomas, the Action Group's vice leader.

Bode Thomas allegedly yelled at him for failing to stand up to acknowledge him as the chairman of the NCNC during a political gathering at a party. After being insulted, Oba Adeyemi II Adeniran up and urged Bode Thomas to go home and bark like a dog. Later, while he was returning home without his group, he began coughing up blood and passed away. Soon after the disaster, Herbert Macaulay and Obafemi Awolowo accused Oba Adeyemi II of poisoning Thomas and banished him from his kingdom. He spent the remainder of his life in Lagos, where his followers continued to pay him visits until his passing in 1960.
