Mikhail Gorbachev, the final president of the Soviet Union, is being lauded by the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), who claims that history will be kind to him for putting the interests of the Russian people before his own political ambitions. Although those changes dominated Gorbachev's political career, history and posterity will remember him favorably for prioritizing the needs of the Soviet people over his own ambition, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the President's spokesperson, Garba Shehu. He passed away in Moscow on Tuesday at the age of 91, according to Russian news organizations. Interfax, TASS, and RIA Novosti cited the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow as saying, "Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a terrible and long illness." Gorbachev, 91, presided from 1985 to 1991, assisting in the end of the Cold War in relations between the US and the USSR. In a letter of appreciation to Gorbachev, Buhari called him "a bold reformer who will be remembered for years to come because of his tremendous contributions to international peace and openness in his own previously rigorously closed society."
"The late Gorbachev was a remarkable gentleman," he said. "His reformist agenda had fundamentally altered Soviet society through his policies of Perestroika and Glasnost, both of which laid the foundation for the economic and political transformation of his own nation and that of others in the defunct Soviet Union. Even if those reforms occupied Gorbachev's political career, history and future generations will remember him favorably for prioritizing the interests of the Soviet people over his own ambition. As an example, Gorbachev's voluntary collapse of the Warsaw Pact military alliance in the interest of world peace for all had an impact on the rest of the globe as well as the former Soviet Union. We must not quickly forget how Gorbachev pushed for the elimination of nuclear weapons by the former Soviet Union and the United States at his meeting with Ronald Reagan, the President continued. Gorbachev's real dedication to long-term international peace and security would never be forgotten, despite the fact that he passed away without seeing his ideal of a nuclear-free world come true.
