Peter Obi, a presidential candidate for the Labour Party, visited Minna, Niger State, on Sunday and met with Gens. Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, two former heads of state.
His desire to run for president in 2023 had nothing to do with the meeting. He went to the event with Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running buddy.
"Today, my running partner, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed and I visited President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, GCFR, at his house in Minna," wrote Obi in a tweet that included pictures from the encounter.
"He welcomed us with great warmth, and we had thoughtful discussions on the situation of our nation. We are appreciative of IBB's fatherly greeting and advice.
Regarding donations to Peter Obi's campaign, the Labour Party speaks
"It was a pleasure and an honor for me and my running mate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, to be invited by Nigeria's military president, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR, at his residence in Minna today," he wrote about the meeting with Abdulsalami.
"Gen Abubakar is a great statesman who kindled our hope for a better future. He has a deep love for Nigeria.
Nigerian politician and businessman Peter Gregory Obi CON was the governor of Anambra from March to November 2006, February to May 2007, and June 2007 to March 2014. He was born on July 19, 1961. He was selected in May 2022 by the Labour Party to represent Nigeria in the 2023 presidential election.
Obi received his degree from the University of Nigeria in 1984 and was born in Onitsha in 1961. After that, he started a career in business and banking and finally attained various executive positions at banks. Before quitting the job to enter politics, Obi was the chairman of Fidelity Bank during the early 2000s. The All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate Obi fought against in the 2003 governor's race was wrongfully declared the winner. Obi was pronounced the victor in 2006 after three years of legal disputes, and he took office in March 2006. He was removed from office in February of the next year, 2007, after being impeached in November of that year. During the 2007 Anambra State governor's election, which was held in accordance with the standard Nigerian electoral calendar of a four-year election interval and in this case went back to Obi's first, previously invalidated election, Obi was once more ousted. However, the judges again stepped in and decided that he should be permitted to serve out the entire four-year term. He was re-elected to office for a second term in 2010. Improvements in state finances, education, and healthcare characterize Obi's administration.
Obi defected to the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014, which helped him earn fresh reputation as a proponent of good administration and a prominent national political figure after he left office. He was chosen as Atiku Abubakar's running mate in the vice presidential primary for the 2019 presidential election, however he was defeated by incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
After leaving the PDP, Obi declared himself the LP's presidential candidate for the general elections scheduled for 2023 in May 2022. Numerous young Nigerians who have been given the moniker "Obi-dients" have supported Obi's presidential campaign, which has been characterized as populist.
Peter Obi was born in Onitsha, Anambra State, on July 19, 1961. His secondary school education was finished at Christ the King College in Onitsha. In 1980, he was accepted into the University of Nigeria, and in 1984, he earned a B.A. (Hons) in philosophy.
Peter Obi studied at the London School of Economics, Columbia Business School, Lagos Business School, and the International Institute for Management Development, where he earned certificates in the Senior Executive Program and the Chief Executive Officer Program. He also attended Harvard Business School, where he completed two major programs. Additionally, he studied at the Judge Business School of Cambridge University, the Sad Business School of Oxford University, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
