No issues between Muslims and Christians, says Kukah

According to Matthew Kukah, the catholic bishop of Sokoto Diocese, there is no conflict between the country's two main religious communities, Muslims and Christians. On Monday morning's TVC News Breakfast broadcast, Bishop Kukah stated that the country's issue was with irresponsible politicians who used religion as a means of oppression rather than liberty. There is no issue between Christians and Muslims, he declared. There is a conflict between irresponsible politicians who don't want to run their countries effectively and irresponsible Christian religious leaders who now view their faith as an instrument of oppression rather than one of liberation. "Since these are two study fields, this has been the main point of my argument. I have dedicated a significant portion of my life to studying theology and the relationship between religion and society, he said with the utmost modesty.

In response to inquiries on the roles played by religion and ethnicity in Nigerian politics, the clergyman indicated that the nation had failed to establish a system of government that prioritized the needs of its people. "That's why there are officials," he continued, "if you're watching a football game or any game at all. You can see for yourself that referees punish coaches who overstep by stepping into the field, even by only one inch, if the official fails to take the necessary action and permits fans to enter the playing area. They receive punishment, and on occasion, they are taken off the field. "This is actually how a state ought to be, now. Because without the state, we'd all be at war with one another. The state is referred to as a leviathan for this reason. You exerted such influence so that the government could defend us. The Nigerian government has demonstrated its incapacity, egregious dysfunction, incapacity, and unwillingness to make citizen welfare the cornerstone of governance.

The cleric added that the Nigerian system was only about politics and not science and that citizens needed to have a "Nigeria land" mentality, which assumes knowledge of shared interests. The elderly man also strongly advocated for a nation where the rule of law would take precedence over religious or ethnic emotions, pointing out that Nigeria was a democracy and not a theocracy. He continued by saying that the function of religion must be defined scientifically, noting that the absence of such a definition gave leaders license to favor one religion or ethnic group over another. The constitution ensures our freedom of religion and our ability to choose what we don't want, according to Kukah. An affiliation is religion. I have the choice not to join an organization. But if there are unsolved concerns regarding the limits of governmental power and how much can be seized in the name of religion, then the current state of anarchy will continue. And for this reason, we have been unable to define and analyze religion's role scientifically.
