ASUU To Decide Suspension Of Strike On Thursday

On Thursday, October 13, 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will decide whether to keep going on strike or call it off.

There were rumors that the union had called off the strike after the meeting on Monday, October 10, 2022, between the union and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

However, a member of ASUU who requested anonymity and spoke to Daily Trust denied the rumor that the union's members would meet on Thursday.

"What is circulating is merely a rumor. In ASUU, there are strategies for dealing with this kind of problem. On Thursday, our NEC will convene to make a decision, the insider stated.

On Monday, February 14, 2022, ASUU went on an indefinite strike to make the government address its outstanding demands.

The government eventually took the union to the National Industrial Court after multiple negotiations between the union and the government failed to resolve their differences.

It should be recalled that the court ordered ASUU to end the strike on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

In order to prevent the lecturers from going on strike while the Federal Government's lawsuit against them is being adjudicated, the trial judge, Polycarp Hamman, issued a restraining order.

However, the union was not happy with the decision and decided to challenge it by going to the Appellate Court.

The Industrial Court's judgment was upheld by the Court of Appeal, which ordered ASUU to start working again right away.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, meantime, has praised Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, for his participation in the dispute between the union and the government.
