All of us should be making our health a priority and taking proactive measures to ensure we remain healthy and catch issues early. In this video, I share how I first discovered that I had cancer. I hope it inspires people to get tested and keep their health in focus.”

The doctor informed Mathew Knowles that the malignancy had a BRCA2 mutation, he further said.

Nigerians responded to the video on various social media channels. One SMillingPresh wrote, “One word I love about the western world is “IMMEDIATELY”… No waste of time when it comes to health. And then the assurance you get in the process helps you get through it all.. Thank God for all Cancer survivors.”

Another social media user wrote, “I love his courage to speak about it in the open and also encourage other men to get tested, men have to be careful and they shouldn’t neglect signs and know mater what always ask questions, cos it helps”

One Oladuni wrote, “BRCA2 mutated, it simply means Beyonce, Solange and their kids could have it… cos that’s Beyoncé’s father.”
The genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer genes 1 and 2, respectively) generate proteins that aid in the repair of DNA damage. Each of these genes is present in two copies in everyone, one from each parent. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are commonly referred to as tumor suppressor genes because they can cause cancer when they undergo specific modifications known as detrimental (or pathogenic) variations (or mutations).

People who inherit harmful mutations in one of these genes are at increased risk of developing a number of malignancies, most notably breast and ovarian cancer but also a number of other types of cancer. Additionally, those who inherit a dangerous variant in BRCA1 or BRCA2 are more likely than non-inherited individuals to develop cancer earlier in life. A kid can inherit a dangerous BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation from either parent. Each kid of a parent who carries a mutation in one of these genes has a 50% chance (or 1 in 2) of inheriting the mutation. Every cell in the body is born with inherited mutations, also called germline mutations or variants. Even if one parent carried a risky form of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, the other parent would have passed on a healthy copy of that gene to the individual (because most detrimental variant-carrying embryos are unable to develop). However, the usual copy may disappear or change in some physiological cells during the course of a person's lifespan. Such a shift is what we call a somatic alteration. Cells can multiply out of control and turn into cancer if BRCA1 or BRCA2 are not functional.
