In a confessional video presented before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of the Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square on Tuesday, October 18, University of Lagos student Chidinma Ojukwu, who is charged with killing Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, denied killing the dead.
When the court resumed watching the recorded video footage of the primary suspect's confessional.
Chidinma denied knowing who killed the victim in the video clip that was played in court. She claims that on the specified day, she walked out, and when she came back, she discovered Ataga on the ground. Terrified, she reportedly hastily grabbed her belongings and departed.
I just grabbed my belongings and went because I was afraid, I don't know who entered," she stated. statement, this was her claim.
Contrary to her admission made previously, when the video of Ataga's lifeless body was shown at the final hearings on October 11, 2022, she claimed to have killed the victim on her own.
In the video, she claims, "Nobody helped me; I did it alone."
Chidinma responded that she didn't deny knowing Ataga but that she didn't kill him when asked why she denied knowing the deceased while being questioned on the video.
I didn't say I didn't know him; I just stated I couldn't kill someone and I didn't kill him.
She insisted she couldn't kill someone when a member of the team that interrogated her questioned why she claimed the blood stains on her clothes were caused by her menstruation.
I did not kill him, and I am unsure of who killed him. "I don't know who came in after I left the room. When I got back, I saw him bleeding.
According to what the suspect is heard saying in the video, she fled from him rather than calling for help when she spotted him lying in a pool of blood because she was afraid.
The defendant said that the deceased had ordered Loud and Rophynol and that she was unsure of his source when asked why she had purchased them.
When Chidinma was questioned about why she grabbed the deceased's two iPhones and Mac laptop, she responded that they were her belongings and that she had snatched them up and run away out of fear.
The ninth prosecution witness, DSP Olusegun Bamidele, from the Intelligence and Tactical Unit of the State Criminal Investigating Department Panti Yaba, provided details about how the first defendant's handwritten statement was obtained and how the second and third defendants were apprehended shortly after the video came to an end while being led into evidence by the Lagos State prosecuting attorney, Yusuf Sule.
After the first defendant was taken into custody on June 23, 2021, the investigating Police officer claimed that her written statement was recorded on June 24.
According to him
"She started writing on her own, but I encouraged her to make sure that her writing is readable or write in capital letters because her handwriting wasn't.
Additionally, she described how she had murdered Michael Usifo Ataga and fled with the knife, phones, and a Macbook laptop. We found the phone hub and took the first defendant with us to the computer village.
The first defendant came to sell the laptop to them a few days ago, and it was one of his colleagues, Ifeoluwa Oluwo, that they completed the transactions together. I and my OC went and met Yomi; we invited him but he insisted that he was unaware of what had happened. I hinted him, and when he arrived at our office, we told him the entire story.
The Macbook was found in this way, and the first defendant acknowledged selling the laptop to them.
I recall her mentioning one DG on the same June 24; she said he helped her obtain an ID card, a driver's license, and an Access Bank ATM, among other things, but she didn't know his entire name and only spoke to him on the phone.
Before being apprehended, the squad tracked the second defendant to Surulere, where he threw his phone out the window and tried to leap out, but was restrained around the waist.
Two small size Itel phones and two Tecno phones totaling four additional phones were found on him. When he was finally brought to our office, I addressed him as DG but he responded that his name wasn't DG. I then asked him who Chidinma was and he then described how he met her.
He claimed to be able to obtain an international passport, a driver's license, and a bank statement. He claimed to have met Chidinma through a buddy named Sam who was an ex-boyfriend of the first defendant.
The second defendant said that after speaking with Sam, he obtained Chidinma's number and visited her in upscale locations in Sabo Yaba.
Along the way, he claimed that Chidinma had contacted him on a specific day of the week and asked him to get her Loud, tobacco, and Rophynol. After collecting the necessary funds, he traveled to Surulere's Shitta neighborhood and obtained the Rophynol from a Mallam there.
He claimed to have sent it to the first defendant while she was in Lekki via a dispatch rider. He also informed me that he has supplied her with Loud, smoke, and Rophynol two or three times while she was in Lekki.
When the dispatched rider arrived in Lekki on one of the instances, he claimed to have phoned the first defendant, who then went to pick up the package, the witness stated.
Bamidele went on to say that the third defendant was apprehended with the assistance of Chidinma Onoh Ojukwu's foster father, their uncle Mr. Obi, and their mother.
He claimed that the third defendant claimed that Chidinma had given her an iPhone as a gift, and that when the first defendant was asked where she got the phone from, she replied that one of her boyfriends had given it to her.
She then suggested that I write for her and admitted that she had killed the victim.
On October 12, 2021, the Lagos State Government filed a nine-count complaint against the three defendants, which led to their arraignment.
Ojukwu and Quadri are accused of committing crimes including conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, creating false bank statements, and theft on up to eight counts. The ninth count against the third defendant, Egbuchu, is that he stole the late Ataga's iPhone 7.
On June 15, 2021, Ojukwu and Quadri are accused of planning and killing Ataga by repeatedly stabbing him in the neck and chest. At 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, the alleged murder occurred. The two were also charged with forgery for allegedly obtaining and fabricating bank account statements that were said to have been produced by the dead.
The trial was postponed until October 20, 2022 by Justice Adesanya.
