Improvements in state finances, education, and healthcare characterize Obi's administration.
Obi defected to the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014, which helped him earn fresh reputation as a proponent of good administration and a prominent national political figure after he left office. He was chosen as Atiku Abubakar's running mate in the 2019 presidential election, however he was defeated by incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
After leaving the PDP, Obi declared himself the LP's presidential candidate for the general elections scheduled for 2023 in May 2022. Many young Nigerians, known as "Obi-dients," have supported Obi's populist presidential campaign, which has been characterized as such.
