Social workers condemn hiring of house helpers that are underage.

Nigerians have been cautioned not to hire minor domestic workers, popularly known as maids or home helpers, by the Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria, who also promised to take legal action against negligent employers. This comes right after the Institute urged more Nigerian states to domesticate the Child Rights Act. Professor Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John, the national president of the CISWPN, made the demand during a news conference on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja. Obashoro-John responded to inquiries from reporters by saying, "House helpers are not the kind of professionals that we are. They do not practice social work. That work is taught to social workers.

"A house help is not a social worker; they are assistants in homes. If a person has achieved the legal age to start working, they are just taking a job. So there is a dilemma if you have a youngster who is not old enough to start working. Social welfare will then intervene to ensure that the youngster is not offered a job or any kind of job because they are not permitted to do so. An assistant at home is not a social worker. "We are implementing the International Labour Organization's standardized definition of a worker. According to the ILO, 15 and 18 are legal in different places. Therefore, a child or anyone under the age of 15 is not allowed to work. Therefore, if your housekeeper is under the age of 15, you will have a problem on your hand "The majority of them are concealed from us, but social work only intervenes when individuals inform us, which is why we are appealing to society. Please inform us of any infractions and anomalies. There is a problem when an eight-year-old lives with you and looks after your infant. However, if our neighbors don't inform us, we cannot know. When we are aware, we act accordingly.

In some circumstances, we report the case and practitioners are informed of the outcome. Social work is one of the professions with the fastest global and African growth rates, according to Obashoro-John earlier in her speech. She claims that it is a new career in Nigeria. She emphasized that in developed nations, it is recognized as the only accelerator for increased social well-being. According to Obashoro-John, "A closer and more in-depth examination of general society reveals that the fundamental difference between the developed and developing worlds is in the quality of social work undertaken. Consequently, this amazing occupation is significant in Nigeria. Keeping these things in mind, social workers continue to make sure that social issues are handled and involve people on various levels through processes of empowerment in order to help them realize their full potential and so improve society. The Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria, which has been operating in Nigeria for more than ten years and was formerly known as the Institute of Social Work of Nigeria, plans to reposition the profession in light of the heroic efforts of the past to give it pride of place in Nigeria and greater significance among disciplines of interest today.

"National growth in Nigeria has been hampered by current issues, particularly those linked to social development. The Nigerian government created the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development in response to these difficulties in order to address the numerous issues. The establishment of this licensed institute will encourage professionals and regulate their conduct. The CISWPN president added that given the country's current circumstances, it is necessary to institutionalize strategic government partners in order to better understand economic realities, develop new strategies and goals, enhance current capabilities, and create action plans to help address social issues. The Institute's new status is "a significant step in the right direction," she continued, "considering the severe scarcity of social workers in our nation's schools, where experts are needed to help young people deal with complicated challenges like trauma, poverty, and rising drug crises."
