How Tinubu accidently resided in Chicago apartments with drug lords - Festus Keyamo

 Festus Keyamo, the chief spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, pushed back following the release of court documents that suggested Bola Tinubu's connections to the illegal drug trade and money laundering in the United States, claiming that Mr. Tinubu only shared a "block of flats" with notorious cocaine dealers in Chicago. 

“What happened was that Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) went to open an account. The address which he used in opening the account was the address used by these people…(sic). I think some blocks of flats. Maybe, he happened to be in that block of flats too.

“So, they now link it that the other people they were investigating for narcotics are in the same address used by Asiwaju to open that account,” Mr Keyamo said on Wednesday on Channels Television program to exonerate the former Lagos governor from the fresh controversies that had been trailing his involvement in drug peddling.

This comes after an old judgment document that appeared in the media on Tuesday said that Tinubu was charged with narcotics trafficking and money laundering by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois recently disclosed certified records of the 1993 lawsuit, which garnered media attention. The documents proved that the US government had requested confiscation of the drug proceeds Mr. Tinubu was allegedly laundering in July 1993. A agreement between the Tinubus and the American authorities saw the $460,000 in the Citibank account forfeited and the Tinubus asked to keep the money in the Heritage Bank account. On September 21, 1993, a federal judge subsequently dismissed the case with prejudice, thereby barring all parties from litigating it again. Whether or if Mr. Tinubu would face charges in Nigerian courts in connection with the same case, however, remained unknown.

The former governor of Lagos has come under heavy public scrutiny due to his murky past, current health, and corruption charges. He has not addressed the most recent issue directly, but his campaign surrogates have highlighted that it is unimportant and will not have an impact on the approaching elections.
