Onika Tanya Maraj was born on December 8, 1982, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago's Saint James neighborhood. Robert Maraj (1956–2021), an executive in finance and occasional gospel musician of Dougla (Afro–Trinidadian mother and Indo–Trinidadian father) ancestry, was her father. Carol Maraj, who is of Afro-Trinidadian origin, is also a gospel singer. When Minaj was younger, Carol worked in the payroll and accounting divisions. A aggressive man with an alcohol and crack cocaine addiction, Minaj's father set fire to their home in December 1987. Her siblings include a younger sister named Ming, a younger sister named Micaiah, and an older brother named Jelani.
Minaj was raised in Saint James, Jamaica, with her grandmother and her older brother, Jelani, along with 11 other cousins. Carol Maraj, the mother of Minaj, held a number of occupations in Saint James prior to receiving her green card at the age of 24. She left Minaj and Jelani in Trinidad with their grandmother and later relocated to the Bronx in New York City to attend Monroe College. When Minaj was five years old, Carol eventually purchased her own home on 147th Street in South Jamaica, Queens, and moved Minaj and Jelani in with her and their father. Minaj said of her upbringing, "I don't think I had a lot of discipline in my household. My mom motivated me, but it wasn't a strict household. I kind of wanted a strict household." Minaj was accepted after a successful audition to the performing and visual arts-focused Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art. Minaj decided to pursue acting after graduating, and in 2001 she was given a role in the Off-Broadway production of In Case You Forget.
In her songs "All Things Go" and "Autobiography," Minaj has admitted that she had an abortion when she was a teenager. Although it has "haunted" her, she has stated that she still stands by her choice. She started working as a waiter at a Red Lobster in the Bronx at the age of 19, but was dismissed for being impolite to customers while she battled with her acting career. She said that "at least 15 jobs" had fired her for comparable reasons. Customer service representatives and office managers on Wall Street were among the other positions available. Minaj recalls purchasing a BMW at the age of 19 with the proceeds from her waitressing job.
