The purported double payment that parents of Nigerian students who were evacuated from Ukraine because of the current conflict with Russia have to make in order for their children to continue their education in Nigeria has been criticized. Taofik Amade, a parent, claimed that the Ukrainian universities had prevented their children from enrolling in the colleges of their choice by refusing to give their academic transcripts when he discussed the situation with journalists in Abuja on Thursday. Instead, he explained, they entered into a mobility agreement through the National Universities Commission with a few Nigerian universities, whereby the students would take courses in part online with Ukraine and in person with the chosen Nigerian universities. In order to rescue the education of the thousands of Nigerian students who are impacted by this scenario, he consequently made an urgent appeal to the Federal Government.
Another parent, Laila Usman, spoke on the same subject and voiced worry that nothing had happened since July, when the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the concerned students to apply for registration in Nigerian universities, leaving the youngsters trapped. "Even in August, the Federal Ministry of Education published a notice urging the returnees from Ukraine to submit an application to the Federal Scholarship board, which they did. My kid hasn't heard anything from them as I speak to you, though," she said.
