One of Wizkid's biggest recent worldwide hits is undoubtedly "Essence," the eleventh track on his fourth studio album Made in Lagos. The song, which was released in 2020, has earned praise, won accolades, and is still at the top of the charts two years later. Essence was ranked as the top song in the United States Afrobeats Songs category for 2022 in the just published Billboard year-end music recaps. At the Grammy Awards in 2022, the song was up for Best Global Music Performance. The song most recently took home the Favourite R&B Song trophy at the 50th American Music Awards.
Early in 2021, various celebrities, including rap icon Snoop Dogg and reality TV star Kylie Jenner, tweeted videos of themselves dancing to the song. The single, which also included Tems, quickly gained popularity in the American music scene. The song's remix, which included Canadian singer Justin Bieber in August of that year, quickly won over listeners. Essence held the top spot on the chart in July after the U.S. Afrobeats chart category was established by Billboard in March 2021.
