Naija vs Mzansi – Why BBTitans Will Be a Very Controversial Show

Millions of Africans will be glued to their television screens on January 15, 2023. For a continental political meeting? No! For an African sporting event? Wrong! The reason is to watch the premiere of BBTitans, a mash-up of the continent's two largest reality series, BBNaija and BBMzanzi.

Nigerian and South African housemates will live in the same house for 72 days to amuse Africa while competing for the $100,000 grand prize. BBTitans will have two hosts, Nigeria's Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and South Africa's Lawrence Maleka, unlike prior seasons. And the winners will be selected by votes cast by African viewers.

BBTitans has had its fair share of controversy since its inception. The concert has been on everyone's lips since it was announced, from teenagers and elders to religious leaders. However, it sparked the most outrage among lawmakers who are vehemently opposed to it because they feel it will diminish youth participation in the upcoming general election.

Yunusa Tanko, the Labour Party's Presidential Campaign Committee spokesperson, accused the opposing party of financing BBTitans to distract Nigerian youths at a recent press conference in Enugu.

"Those putting up a reality show at a time when we are counting days to the general elections are enemies of the youths and, by extension, all well-meaning Nigerians. Big Brother Naija recently concluded. "Why the 'Titans' now, when we are about to have a huge election that will determine the destiny of Nigerian youths?" he wondered.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, on the other hand, addressed the problem by saying, "Nigerian youths are extremely capable of going out to vote and also coming back to watch anything they want to watch."

Although BBTitans has no direct control over the country's political affairs, it will undoubtedly suffer more blowback in the weeks leading up to and following the election.
