We chose not to sue the INEC chair, DSS

The Department of State Services has denied rumors that it is suing Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, for allegedly failing to declare assets. In a statement, Peter Afunanya, the DSS's spokesperson, disclosed this. The commission expressed concern over a newspaper's misrepresentation of a court order that barred security agents from detaining or investigating the INEC chairman. The Department of State Services (DSS) issued the following statement in response to a 5th January 2023 online article that stated, "Court Prevents DSS from Arresting INEC Chairman." "The Service has found that the newspaper's reporting of what happened in court was inaccurate and out of context. In light of this, the service informed the Newspaper's editorial authority of their dissatisfaction. Although the organization claimed that the information given in its online version was different from that in the printed version, it made a commitment to resolve the issues raised but didn't. But given that the aforementioned information is inaccurate, this statement becomes crucial for directing public perception. The misleading impression that the service sued the INEC Chairman was conveyed.

"However, the service is aware of the wicked elements' activities, especially their efforts to stir up unwarranted controversy surrounding the upcoming general elections, in order to foment trouble in the nation." One of their tactics is to undermine the service's attempts to maintain unity and a peaceful coexistence. Another is a desire to inflame the political climate and covertly take advantage of the judiciary to divert attention from or even to weaken not only the service but also other security and law enforcement organizations from carrying out their constitutional duties. The DSS consequently cautions these people and organizations to abandon their cunning intentions. Additionally, it cautions all significant stakeholders to exercise caution and thwart any attempts to utilize them to subvert the law.
