Jigawa government: Old notes are still valid.

The old naira notes are still considered legal cash in Jigawa State up until the Supreme Court's decision, according to the state government. This was mentioned in a statement released late on Thursday by Ibrahim Mamsa, the state commissioner for information, youth sports, and culture. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret. ), has stated that only the N200 old note is still valid until April 10 while the N500 and N1000 notes are no longer accepted. The Jigawa State Government wishes to inform the general public that it has observed some people and corporate entities rejecting the outdated N200, N500, and N1000 notes. The behavior of these people and organizations worries the Jigawa State Government. "Being a law-abiding government, Jigawa State is one of the state governments that have filed lawsuits before Nigeria's Supreme Court. The court has issued an order prohibiting the Federal Government of Nigeria, acting alone or through the Central Bank of Nigeria and/or commercial banks, ministries, parastatals, organizations, or through any person or persons (natural and artificial) of any kind, from suspending or deciding or ending on February 10, 2023 the time period within which the now-outdated 200, 500, and 1000 naira denominations of the naira may no longer be legal tender while the court considers the matter.

"The Jigawa State Government respects the rights of its people, and those refusing the now-outdated currencies are urged to stop breaking the law and upsetting the Jigawa State population. The Jigawa State Government has made clear that it will not hold back in enforcing the Supreme Court of Nigeria's ruling using section 287(1) of the Constitution (as amended) and other applicable laws. The state government asked citizens to contact the closest competent authorities in the state if any trader or business organization declines to recognize the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes as legal tender. Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, also disobeyed Buhari's directive late on Thursday in a statewide broadcast, saying that plans to install an interim administration in Nigeria included the redesign of the naira. El-Rufai insisted that old notes are still accepted for transactions in the state and urged citizens to do so.
