Why Nigeria’s economy will boom if government takes Nollywood seriously – Ini Edo

Ini Edo, a Nigerian actress, has provided reasons why the federal government should give the entertainment industry the attention and support it needs to prosper.

Despite being the country's most profitable industry, she stated that some of the key issues include insufficient public support and a lack of appropriate institutions.

When pressed to elaborate on her opinion that the film business is a doorway to Nigeria's developmental problem, the seasoned actress said this during an interview with the Punch. According to Ini Edo:

It is one of the most profitable sectors in the country. It employs millions of young people, not to mention the amount of individuals removed off the streets and the massive investments. If only those in positions of power see the value of the film industry to Nigeria's economy, I believe the government would ensure that the necessary institutions are in place to allow the business to grow.

It is one thing to perceive (potential); it is quite another to do something about it. Imagine if I had to bankroll a show like Shanty Town myself. No one offered any assistance. A lack of electricity is an issue, as is the high cost of production. It cannot possibly favor one."

"I addressed the government aspect. Another consideration is finance. Funding appears to be a major issue in the sector, but I believe things are changing since people can now walk up to one and say they want to invest (in the industry).

That has been remarked to me a handful of times since Shanty Town was launched. That is, if we continue to improve and grow as an industry, finance will become less of a barrier."
